Transforming Eastern and Southern Africa’s Digital Economic Landscape: Insights from the 2024 Malawi International ICT Expo

The COMESA Business Council (CBC) recently showcased its commitment to driving digital innovation and economic empowerment across Eastern and Southern Africa at the 2024 International ICT Expo, organized by the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) in Lilongwe, on 9th – 10th May 2024.


Mr. Teddy Soobramanien, CEO of CBC, delivered a keynote presentation titled “Unleashing Digital Innovation: Transforming Eastern and Southern Africa’s Economic Landscape.” In his address, Mr. Soobramanien emphasized the transformative potential of digital innovation in unlocking new opportunities for inclusive growth and economic empowerment in the region. He underscored the integration of AI, Blockchain, and IoT as driving forces for digital inclusivity, addressing challenges, and fostering economic development. Citing a report by the African Development Bank, Mr. Soobramanien highlighted the significant impact of digital financial inclusion on the region’s GDP growth, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts in this direction.

Dr. Jonathan Pinifolo, CBC’s Chief Operating Officer, participated in a panel discussion focused on the role of e-commerce in driving economic empowerment and fostering entrepreneurship in Malawi. Dr. Pinifolo explored opportunities and challenges in the country’s e-commerce landscape, offering valuable insights into harnessing digital platforms for economic growth and job creation.

CBC’s President, Mr. James Chimwaza, was honored with a lifetime achiever award, recognizing his significant contributions to the field of digital innovation and economic development. This accolade reflects his commitment to driving positive change and fostering innovation-driven growth in Malawi and beyond.

CBC extends its congratulations to other institutions recognized at the Expo, including Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM), ImoSyS, SPARC Systems, National Bank of Malawi, and MACRA. The Expo served as a platform to celebrate achievements, foster collaboration, and showcase groundbreaking initiatives driving digital transformation and economic empowerment in the region.
