In an era where digital technology is rapidly reshaping the financial landscape, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Business Council (CBC) has taken a significant step towards promoting financial inclusion. On July 17-18, 2024, the CBC successfully hosted the workshop, “Digitalisation Toolkits for Greater Financial Inclusion” in Tunisia, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s journey towards a more inclusive financial future.
The two-day event, skillfully moderated by Mr. Tarek Mejouel from the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, financial experts, and entrepreneurs. The workshop’s primary aim was to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to harness the power of digital financial services in bridging the gap between underserved populations and the formal financial sector.
CBC’s CEO, Mr. Teddy Soobramanien, set the tone for the event with his inspiring opening remarks, emphasizing the transformative potential of digital financial services in driving economic growth and reducing inequality. Mrs. Aida Beji Kallel, a respected member of the Executive Board of CNFE and President of the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs, followed with a warm welcome that underscored the importance of financial inclusion in empowering women and marginalized communities.
The workshop was officially inaugurated by Mr. Lazhar Bannour, Director General of Trade and Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Trade and Export Development. His presence highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster financial inclusion and economic development.
Over the course of two intensive days, participants were immersed in a comprehensive curriculum covering various aspects of digital financial services. The training sessions provided in-depth insights into mobile banking, e-wallets, and online payment platforms, demonstrating how these technologies can make financial services more accessible to underserved populations.
A key focus of the workshop was enhancing participants’ understanding of crucial financial concepts, tools, and technologies. This knowledge empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their financial activities and investments, a critical step towards achieving true financial inclusion.
The workshop also addressed the needs of small businesses and entrepreneurs, providing valuable strategies for leveraging digital tools to access new markets and expand customer bases. This aspect of the training is particularly crucial in the current global economic landscape, where digital presence can make or break a business.
As the workshop concluded, there was a palpable sense of optimism among participants. The knowledge and skills gained during these two days are expected to contribute significantly to advancing financial inclusion in the COMESA region. By equipping key stakeholders with the tools to navigate the digital financial landscape, the CBC has taken a concrete step towards creating a more inclusive and prosperous future for all.
The success of this workshop underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing complex economic challenges. As we move forward, it is clear that the path to greater financial inclusion will be paved with digital innovations and informed strategies. The CBC’s initiative serves as a beacon, guiding the way towards a future where financial services are accessible to all, regardless of their socio-economic status or geographical location.
