Malawi’s Financial Inclusion Breakthrough: Workshop Empowers SMEs

Last week, Lilongwe, Malawi, played host to a highly successful training workshop, conducted in collaboration with the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI). This pivotal event marked the conclusion of our “Digitalization Toolkits for Greater Financial Inclusion” training series for SMEs, which has traversed eight pilot countries. The next phase will see the Training of Trainers (ToT) initiative, aimed at amplifying the dissemination of the course’s knowledge and skills.

Participants hailing from diverse sectors such as Agriculture, Mining, ICT, and general supplies were immersed in essential knowledge on leveraging digital tools for e-commerce, branding, marketing, and online payment facilitation. Additionally, modern business management skills were imparted to empower MSMEs to thrive in today’s competitive environment.

A standout feature of the workshop was the introduction of the COMESA Digital Retail Payments platform and the e-Academy. This innovative e-learning portal is designed to enhance entrepreneurial skills and enterprise competitiveness for micro and small merchants across the COMESA region, supporting self-directed learning through computers, tablets, and smartphones.

The event was graced by notable figures including Ms. Vera Kamtukule, Malawi’s Minister of Tourism. She emphasized the vital role of women in digital financial inclusion, particularly highlighting their significant involvement in cross-border trade within the COMESA region. Other distinguished guests included Dr. Wisley Phiri, President of MCCCI and Group Managing Director of Sparc Systems Limited, who presented on setting up successful businesses, opportunities, and challenges.

We were also honored by the presence of:

  • Mr. James Chimwaza, President of the CBC Board
  • Representatives from FDH Bank, with Madalitso Mchere Banda, Merchant & Payments Manager, presenting on Payments, M-Loans, and Agency Banking for Collection and Transaction
  • Mr. Chikakula Miti, CEO of COMFWB
  • Mrs. Takondwa Chirwa, Marketing Manager of FINCA Malawi, who presented on e-commerce.

With over 100 participants from various industries, the workshop not only provided valuable insights but also fostered networking opportunities among stakeholders. We eagerly anticipate the positive impact this training will have on their businesses and look forward to continued engagement towards achieving greater financial inclusion.
