Malawi, commonly referred to as the ‘Warm heart of Africa”, is located in the Southeastern part of Africa. It is landlocked and border by Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Tough landlocked, it also consists of Lake Malawi, the third largest lake which forms up to three-quarters of Malawi's eastern border. Its population is estimated to be approximately 13 million people.

Malawi is a member of the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Its economic profile is summarized below: Malawi’s economy is primarily agro based with dependence on a few primary products like tobacco and sugar. Tobacco is the largest single export revenue earner. In terms of GDP contribution, services account for about 53.2% of GDP, whilst manufacturing is at 12% and agriculture at 30%. Key services sectors include travel and tourism, telecommunications, retail and wholesale and financial services.

The private sector is represented by the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry- MCCI. Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) is a partnership of enterprises and associations representing all sectors of the economy of Malawi. We are committed to the achievement of Malawi’s socio-economic development through joint action and enlightened dialogue among private sector members and constituencies. The MCCCI has been in the forefront of Malawi’s private sector development efforts for over 100 years. Established in 1892, the first Chamber organization operated as a Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce to reflect the predominant focus of the economy on agriculture production and trade. MCCCI offers a number of services to its members and the entire business community. The services include the following:

  • Providing business and economic information for decision making;
  • Issuing certificates of origin;
  • Organizing trade promotion events;
  • Providing business management training;
  • Assist in linking national economic operators with partners in the sub-region and international;
  • Representing the business community at national, regional and international fora;
  • Promote national and international trade including trade events such as fairs and mentoring participation Burundian firms in fairs and foreign exhibitions;
  • Offering business premises to small entreprises.

Lobbying and advocacy; MCCCI carries out research and analyzes policies and regulations to identify obstacles to doing business in the country to ensure a conducive environment for private sector development. The research and analysis provides MCCCI with a basis for lobbying on issues that need to be addressed by the government. MCCCI uses a number of platforms in its lobbying and advocacy process.   • Public Private Dialogue Forum:

    This is a high level forum of public and private sector representatives. It is co-chaired by Ministry of Industry and Trade and private sector members. The Forum discusses challenges faced by the business community and adopts resolutions that would ultimately improve the socio-economic, legal and regulatory environment for business operations

  • Business Meetings:

    These are held with the relevant government officials and the Parliamentary committees to discuss and resolve issues affecting the operations of businesses.

  • Press Briefings:

    MCCCI holds conferences to brief the media on private sector development issues and also comments through the media on issues of national socio-economic importance.

  • National Annual Budget Consultations:

    MCCCI provides input into the National Annual Budget through Pre- and Post-Budget consultation.
