Seychelles is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar and about 1500km east of mainland S.E Africa. It consists of an archipelago of islands, with an estimated surface area of 455 square kilometres and a population of about 89 000 people. This makes it the smallest country in Africa in terms of surface area and population.
Seychelles is a member of the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa), Indian Ocean Region (IOC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Its economic profile is summarized below: It’s primarily a services driven economy with primary reliance on tourism and fisheries for both livelihoods and export revenue. The services sector contributes to about 71% of the economy, with manufacturing at 9 % and agriculture at 3%. Tourism is estimated to account for 29 percent of GDP, providing about 30 percent of employment and 70 percent of foreign exchange earnings. Seychelles enjoys an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of almost 1.4 million square kilometers in one of the world’s major tuna fishing grounds promoting tuna fishing and processing which accounts for about 8 percent of GDP and 35 percent of exports.
