Sudan is an Arab republic located in the Nile Valley of North Africa, bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, and Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It split into two countries in 2011 due to conflict; forming Sudan and South Sudan. It is the third largest country in Africa with a surface area of an area of 1,886,068 square kilometres with an estimated population of 37 million persons.
Sudan is a member of the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Its economic profile is summarized below: Sudan is in the process of reconstruction and is implementing some political and economic reforms which can restore the country to its growth path. The economy is largely driven by the oil sector, with oil and petroleum products being the largest export revenue earners with mining and oil contributing about 8% GDP. The services sector contributes to approximately 46% GDP, with agriculture at 34% and manufacturing at 9%.
