Policy & Advocacy Transporters & Logistics Services

COMESA Business Council (CBC) convened the 1st COMESA Transporters & Logistics Services Industries Regional Dialogue from the 17th-18th September, 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya. The Dialogue was held under the theme, “Towards improved trade facilitation and reducing the cost of doing Business in the Transport and logistics services industries”. The objective of the dialogue was to engage key public authorities on private sector positions and recommendations on reducing transport costs to doing business in the region. The Dialogue focused on harmonizing common positions of the businesses in the Transporters and Logistics industry, through core discussions on pertinent issues that are directly and indirectly contributing to the high costs of business along the transport corridors. The key discussions ranged from issues of hard infrastructure, information technology, risk management, regional cooperation, Regional Bonds, Electronic Tracking, Road safety, Port efficiency, illicit trade, uncompetitive business practices and Public Private Engagement. The meeting saw the formation of the Transporters and Logistics Services Industry Workgroup.

The Work plan of the Technical Workgroup; is derived from its Terms of References;

  • Lobby and advocate for the interest of the private sector in the policy making process at COMESA and at the national level and regional level;
  • Ensure a harmonized and informed position is presented to the CBC Board for advocacy with all interests of the sectors represented;
  • Ensure Increased Policy Dialogue between Public and Private Sector at the regional level;
  • Ensure that the positions of Work Group are presented to the policy organs meetings for consideration;
  • Ensure Increased participation of the private sector membership in policy dialogue;

CBC provides demand driven services and proactive services in terms of advocacy, business linkages and membership development for Transporters and Logistics Services Work group. We are working towards concretization of the activities of the work group as part of the building the Coalition of Services Industries in COMESA. In fulfillment of the above objectives the Work Group has already inputted its recommendations into the Ninth Meeting of Infrastructure Technical Committee for Transport, Communications, Information Technology and Energy was held in Bahir Dar, The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from 18th to 20th February, 2016. The have been subsequently inputted into the CBC Institutional Report submitted to the Intergovernmental Committee and Council of Ministers in 2016
